Amazing work ...
I was very interested to read in last weeks Free Press (October 15) about Julie Lowe cycling 350 miles in order to raise money for the local charity The Kernos Centre which provides support services and counselling for people, of all ages and walks of life.
I thoroughly appreciate the work that is done at the Kernos and I am undergoing counselling there myself at present.
I have followed with interest the work provided by this charity and find it difficult to see how they manage to keep afloat whilst receiving no statutory funding. They do amazing work there and I cannot thank them enough for what they are doing for me, and for many, many others.
I so wish the Kernos Centre would get the recognition they so badly need. Their counsellors work tirelessly and so do all the staff in the background. There's the administration staff and therapists and I would like to say a big 'thank you' to all concerned.
I am always greeted by the wagging tail of a lovely dog one of the receptionists have, and although it's difficult sometimes to face people, it is therapeutic in itself to be welcomed by a furry friend who loves the odd chew!
Christine Boatwright opened the Centre and I don't think it's been an easy ride for her and all concerned there.
I think there have been times where they have wondered how they can keep the service going. I have had concerns too that maybe one day unless funding comes forward, that they may have to consider closing and it would have such a detrimental effect on the lives of so many sufferers who are receiving guidance in their psychological well-being.
Sudbury needs a place of safety like this where people can talk their mental health problems through with experienced counsellors.
The Kernos is recommended by some local GP's, but as far as I'm aware, although it lightens the doctor's workload, the NHS doesn't provide any payment for patient referrals. I admire people like Julie Lowe who take it upon themselves to raise money for this charity.
Again, I would like to say a big thank you to all the staff.
... 'Meg' (our 'furry friend') and Kernos staff would like to say 'Woof' and 'thank you' to our client. It's compliments like this that make it all worth while ...
